Kenyan Govt Tries To Deport Opposition Politician Again - lawyer

Raila Odinga at the JKIA seeking to rescue Miguna Miguna

Tweeting from what he called "Toilet at Terminal 2", a Kenyan opposition politician said Wednesday he was still detained in the "filthy" facilities at the country's main airport after he refused an attempt to deport him amid lingering election tensions.

Odinga was however humiliated by police officers at the airport as he helplessly watched as Miguna getting bungled into a Dubai bound plane violently.

"Miguna Miguna has gone on Emirates flight EK 722", Cliff Ombeta told Reuters by phone without giving details. Miguna protested and the attempt to put him on the flight failed.

The opposition politician, Miguna Miguna, was detained on Monday when he returned on a flight from overseas, a month after being deported in a dispute over his dual citizenship amid an escalation of political tensions in Kenya.

Miguna Miguna, a lawyer, was deported by Kenyan authorities in February for his role in a protest by opposition leader Raila Odinga, who maintains he was the victor of an election that returned President Uhuru Kenyatta to power past year.

On Tuesday, Mr Orengo and Otiende Amollo stuck court orders demanding the release of Dr Miguna Miguna at the Immigration Department's offices at JKIA.

Drama at JKIA as Miguna Miguna resists deportation

Odinga came to the airport to lobby for Miguna to be let back into Kenya, Orengo said. The politician then staged a protest and police cordoned off an area in the worldwide terminal at Jomo Kenyatta global Airport, the official said. "I am personally concerned because it is happening in my county and we would like to know what is happening because we would like to see people travelling in and outside the country", Sakaja said as he pleaded for two weeks to provide a comprehensive statement.

The rights official said that up to 100 police officers beat up journalists and opposition supporters during the confrontation.

It was unclear if the dispute would have any impact on an agreement announced this month between opposition leader Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Odinga had argued that Kenyatta lacked legitimacy because his initial August 8 re-election victory was nullified by the Supreme Court over "irregularities and illegalities". The repeat ballot had a low turnout as Odinga boycotted it, citing a lack of electoral reforms.

Miguna was at Odinga's side when the opposition leader took an oath as the "people's president" at the mock inauguration. The government responded by arresting opposition politicians.
