It happened in an area between the Lafayette Square park and the White House that is popular among pedestrians who use it as a cut-through or as a place to take pictures or protest.

A witness told The Washington Post a man shot himself within a crowd of some 100 people.

None of the shots appeared to be aimed at the White House. He is at West Palm Beach in the state of Florida and is expected to return to Washington D.C. Saturday evening.

No others were injured, but the shooting shut down the area around the White House and sent many areas of the capital into lockdown.
