She did not take questions.

During Tuesday's press conference, Barry, 54, told reporters: "While my time of mayor today concludes, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people will never come to an end". Her lawyer said in the court hearing that Barry would resign later Tuesday as part of the plea agreement.

Barry agreed to reimburse the city $10,000 and serve three years probation, according to local media reports. But soon enough the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was checking into the possibility that the lovers had illegally financed their affair through expense reimbursements for travel on the taxpayer's dime. Vice Mayor David Briley will take over as mayor starting today, Tuesday. His first words were: "I need some coffee". The election to officially replace Barry will occur during the August 2 general election. The document also provided deleted cellphone conversations from Forrest's phone during the trips.

A political expert in Memphis said it's possible that Barry used her resignation as a bargaining chip with the District Attorney's Office. Barry's admission followed the painful loss of the Barrys' only child, Max, in July after an overdose on a combination of drugs, including opioids. While today is primarily about the smooth transition from my administration to that of Vice Mayor Briley, I would be remiss if I didn't acknowledge and thank the thousands and thousands of people who have reached out to me, written me, encouraged me, comforted me, anxious endlessly about me, and most importantly prayed for me during these many hard and trying months.

In January, Barry said she and Forrest are no longer seeing each other. Barry travelled alone with Forrest on nine of the trips, including one to Greece in September, according to the newspaper.

A contentious US$5.4 billion mass-transit project she has backed is up for voter approval in May. Before becoming mayor, Barry earned an MBA from Vanderbilt University and was an ethics and compliance officer in the telecommunications and health care industries. Years ago, she and Sgt. Forrest helped me by taking care of a really terrifying stalker issue I had. In addition to this, Forrest gained $173,843.13 in overtime pay from July 2015 to January 2017.

The affair began in 2016, several months after Barry was elected. She has said the relationship is over but has not disclosed when it ended.

Barry tweeted minutes after her resignation, saying that it was the "privilege" and "honor" of her career to serve as mayor. He promised transparency and says he will work to restore the public trust.
