Orange Snow Hit Parts of Europe This Weekend

The weird phenomenon has been reported in cities in Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Romania and footage of the odd snow quickly went viral.

While the sight of burnt-orange snow is certainly odd, it's not something to fear as it all comes down to a unusual natural phenomenon that brought two of the world's weather systems together.

A spokesman said it was likely the result of winds blowing sand from the Sahara desert, which then fell as rain.

This is one of the largest transfers of desert sand from the Sahara to Greece ever, according to the Athens Observatory.

BBC reports the phenomenon appeared to affect areas of countries including Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania and Moldova. Once in Europe, the sand particles mixed with snow and rain, giving the snow a distinctive orange tint.

NASA satellite imagery shows plumes of dust from the Sahara moving across the Mediterranean, north toward the east of Europe.

The southern island of Crete was particularly badly affected, with some parts reporting dust in the air 10 times normal levels.

It was assumed that the orange snow was caused by a heavy sandstorm that happened in neighboring Kazakhstan.

A more recent event occurred in January 2018 when residents of a town in central Kazakhstan witnessed black snow because of air pollution from the iron and steel industry.
