Paul Ryan denies rumor that he'll step down as House Speaker

40 students are taking part in the 4-day march

House Speaker Paul Ryan has denied rumors he is planning to stand down, after a Nevada Republican said there would be an announcement on the subject in the next two months.

"The speaker is not resigning", Ryan's spokeswoman Ashlee Strong told Business Insider in response to Amodei's comments.

A Nevada lawmaker says Capitol Hill is buzzing with a rumor that House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) will soon resign and be replaced by Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.).

Amodei added that "nobody has talked to" members of Congress about "how they are going to vote" on new leadership.

"I don't know. If I was just guessing, he wanted to do the tax-cut bill", Amodei said, referencing the passage in Congress of major tax cuts late a year ago.

When Amodei was asked why Ryan would resign now - which would be politically problematic for the GOP already rattled by the slew of Congressional retirements - Amodei suggested it would be because the Wisconsin Republican has achieved his long-sought goals.

"If I was just guessing, he wanted to do the tax bill", said the Nevada Congressman.

Ryan's future on Capitol Hill has been a topic of conversation ahead of a hard campaign season, as Republicans try to keep the House majority.

Shortly after this report surfaced, Scalise's office told Politico that Scalise "fully supports" Ryan to remain speaker. Ryan has been mentioned as a presidential candidate before, although Trump will be up for re-election in 2020. The Shorewood high schoolers started their walk on Sunday, and they'll travel about 12 miles a day until they reach Ryan's office in Janesville on Wednesday.

"The talk primarily is focused on Steve Scalise, who is from Louisiana".

The current No. 2 Republican in the House, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, is above Scalise on the leadership ladder.

Then again, McCarthy, a close ally of Trump's, was already passed over for the job once, when he found himself involved in a mini-scandal for suggesting the House Select Committee on Benghazi's job was to undermine former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
