Power bank catches fire in a flight's overhead cabin luggage

A crew member tries to put out the fire using a bottle of water

Fortunately, the electronic device caught fire before takeoff and not amid mid-flight.

Passengers flying from Guangzhou to Shanghai on February 25, Sunday, were left shocked when they saw smoke and fire on the flight at the time of boarding.

According to the news outlet, the passenger whose bag was on fire was taken into custody.

Thankfully nobody was hurt during the incident.

The flight was of China Southern Airline and was still in Guangzhou when the power bank kept in the hand-baggage cabin caught fire.

Videos were posted online and have been going viral since then. The reason for the fire was identified as a mobile power bank. In a video taken by a passenger onboard flight, it can be seen that the fire suddenly erupted from a passenger's bag in the overhead bin.

The fire was put out with the help of the fire and security departments, and did not cause further damage, the airline said in the post. However, on social media, the flight attendant's technique of dousing the flames with water was questioned and criticized.

According to ChannelNewsAsia, the passengers were finally put on a replacement aircraft and left the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport at 2.53PM, nearly three hours after their scheduled time.

In a statement, China Southern Airlines reportedly said passengers were boarding the jet when someone noticed the bag was in fumes. The charger was not in use when the fire started.
