Pyongyang still silent on Kim-Trump summit

"Missile launches clearly mean a lot to the North Koreans".

While much of the world responded with horror to President Donald Trump's talk of "fire and fury" against North Korea, the bellicose threats appear to have backed down Kim Jong Un and moved the United States toward the most meaningful diplomacy it's had with Pyongyang in decades. In December, his White House leaked stories to reporters contemplating a strike against North Korea. "The president has been very clear in what the objective is here".

"The situation on the Korean peninsula has recently undergone very positive changes".

The administration officials credited toughened economic sanctions imposed by the United Nations, and pushed by the United States, with helping bring Kim to the brink of negotiations.

In a September 5, 2017, post, Mr. Adams wrote, “in Kim Jong Un I suspect we have a negotiating partner who understands all dimensions. we are also closer than we have ever been to a permanent solution.”. "It's impacted his conduct", Shah said.

U.S. President Donald Trump declared Friday that he is ready to hold a summit with Kim by the end of May.

"But the important thing is the diplomatic work that has to go in before such a meeting".

President Moon's chief envoy praised the role of China and President Xi in nudging North Korea toward denuclearization and getting Pyongyang and Washington to agree to talks. In an interview en route to the Middle East, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis declined to discuss the timing and scale of the exercises. After all, the reason he is willing to slow his program and come to a meeting with Trump is not the president's "fire and fury" rhetoric -- it is the simple fact that he and his scientists have worked hard, spent an enormous amount of his country's limited resources, and built a boutique nuclear capability with demonstrable reach. "You need to have the people around you that can help get to a better place".

In terms of the May meeting between Trump and Kim, we should hope that it follows the fundamental dictate of the Hippocratic Oath: "Do no harm". Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), who said in a statement that the USA must remain "deeply skeptical" of North Korea's intentions and "under no circumstances" grant "unilateral concessions" to Kim Jong Un.

Trump said Saturday that he believes North Korea will abide by its pledge to suspend missile tests while he prepares for the summit.

On Friday, one day after Trump announced the Trump-Kim summit, White House press secretary, Sarah Sanders, said any meeting with Pyongyang would be conditional with "zero concessions".

Kim Jong-un has said that he wants to speak with Trump about deeper cooperation with the United States of America and Trump specifically.

South Korea's government will also decide on whether to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership within the first half of this year, Kim said at the meeting.

"We have not seen nor received an official response from the North Korean regime regarding the North Korea-U.S. summit", said Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman for South Korea's Unification ministry.
