Retail giant Walmart to restrict gun sales after Florida school shooting

The sea of change Just two weeks after the Parkland school shooting, Dick's Sporting Goods discontinued the sale of all assault-style rifles, high capacity magazines and bump stocks, as well as restricting the sale of firearms to people over the age of 21.

L.L. Bean said it will no longer sell guns or ammunition to anyone under the age of 21.

Dick's, one of the nation's largest sports retailers, also said it will no longer sell assault-style weapons to customers and went as far as urging elected officials to enact what it called "common sense gun reform".

J.C. Penney said that it has eliminated about 360 jobs at its headquarters and at stores throughout the country.

Walmart Inc. stopped selling AR-15 guns and other semi-automatic weapons in 2015. He is charged with using an AR-15 semiautomatic assault rifle to carry out the killings.

Several major corporations, including MetLife, Hertz and Delta Air Lines, have cut ties with the NRA since the Florida tragedy.

Walmart announced on February 28 that it would stop selling firearms and ammunition to anyone younger than 21 years old and that it would remove all online items "resembling assault-style rifles".

Sporting goods chain Bass Pro Shops, which owns Cabela's, didn't respond to requests for comment.

The shooting, which resulted in the death of 17 individuals, has reignited the national conversation on gun-control.

Federal law allows long guns such as rifles and shotguns to be sold to qualifying buyers 18 or older. CEO James Debney said on a conference call. "But we have to help solve the problem that's in front of us".

The rift between corporate American and the gun lobby is growing.

Outdoor retailer REI says it's halting future orders of some popular brands — including CamelBak water carriers, Giro helmets and Camp Chef stoves — whose parent company also makes ammunition and assault-style rifles.

It added: "Our heritage as a company has always been in serving sportsmen and hunters, and we will continue to do so in a responsible way".

Companies like Dick's had already changed gun-sale policies in the wake of the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in CT, but the Parkland shooting has opened a fissure between a portion of corporate America and organizations like the National Rifle Association. The industry is highly fragmented and made up mostly of small, independent businesses - about 6,500 of them.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters that while the president is "still very much interested in improving" the background check system, he doesn't exactly back the idea of expanding them for all gun purchases.

Florida gunman Nikolas Cruz had legally purchased a gun at a Dick's store, although it was not the weapon used in the massacre. Companies are showing they can contribute if they are willing to lead.

Tyvor Capital LLC acquired a new position in Dicks Sporting Goods Inc (NYSE:DKS) in the fourth quarter, according to the company in its most recent Form 13F filing with the Securities & Exchange Commission. They love our Country and will do the right thing.

Ban sales of toy guns.

"I firmly believe that it is morally and constitutionally wrong to infringe upon the rights of a law abiding citizen in any way, and I will not work for a company that pushes for the restriction of the Second Amendment", Degarmo wrote.

Platt said she now plans to start buying more at her local Dick's store, including a pair of sneakers this week.

But many others were unhappy with the company's move, some posting on the Dick's page that they would stop shopping at its stores.
