Steven Pienaar announces retirement from football after 18 years in the game

He was last seen by Premier League followers playing for Sunderland before leaving in 2017

"Today I'm announcing my retirement from football,"Pienaar said in a video posted on Twitter".

Former Everton, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Steven Pienaar on Thursday night, retired form professional football, after he was released by Absa Premiership Champions, Bidvest Wits.

"My family has been supportive of the decision I've made and I just thought I have to be honest to myself, my body and my family".

"Thanks for the love throughout my career".

"It's a bit weird [no longer being a footballer], I'm just getting used to it".

Pienaar was capped 61 times for South Africa and twice won the Eredivisie with Ajax. Follow me on social media, there's an announcement coming soon, and you guys will be the first to know. "Schillo" left for Ajax Amsterdam from Ajax Cape Town back in 2000.

Subsequently, Pienaar moved to German side Borussia Dortmund before he switched to Everton in the Premier League, where he was adjudged "Player of the Year" for the 2009-10 season, Sport24 reported.

Pienaar spent most of his career in Europe, playing in three different countries.

The former Bafana Bafana captain earned 61 global caps representing South Africa at the 2002 and 2010 World Cups.

'I still get messages from fans in England and I'd like to thank them for their messages of support over the years.
