Voter's ID, passport will do, Aadhaar not compulsory for NEET 2018 enrolment

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on 20 March the banks and other institution would have only 10 days left which might be difficult

The Centre had said that since some more time would be needed to conclude the prolonged hearing in the Aadhaar case, the government may extend the deadline from March 31, 2018.

The petitioners, who approached the court against the CBSE notification and others who have challenged the Aadhaar scheme, said the government had been issuing several such notifications, which in fact, amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court's orders.

The bench said that there is no problem in extending the deadline and it will pass appropriate orders in this regard.

Jain had told the Court that the last date for application is March 9 and hence sought urgent listing for interim relief.

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on 20 March, banks and other institutions would have only 10 days left to implement Aadhaar verification, which might be hard.

Earlier in the day, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) told the court that it had not authorised the CBSE to mandatorily take Aadhaar number of students to get themselves enrolled for appearing in the NEET.

Justice Chandrachud said even if the court reserved its verdict on March 20, the banks and other institution would have only 10 days left, which might be hard.

The mandatory Aadhaar rule will apply on all NEET candidates, except those residing in Assam, Meghalaya and Jammu and Kashmir, the board had said.

A 5-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, comprising of Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and Justices Justices A.K. Sikri, A.M. Khanwilkar, D.Y. Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan, that are hearing petitions contesting the validity of the Aadhaar, agreed with the AG's contention.

The court extended the ambit of this order to not just NEET 2018 but all other all-India exams scheduled for the near future. It also directed the Centre to communicate the decision to the CBSE "so that they can upload the necessary information on their website so that students are not affected".
