"To honor his wife of 73 years and her commitment to family literacy, for which she raised over $110 million over the course of over 30 years, [George H.W. Bush] will be wearing a pair of socks festooned with books at today's funeral service for former First Lady Barbara Bush", family spokesman Jim McGrath said. He choked up at one point, saying his mother - who was known for her self-deprecating remarks about her wrinkles and grey hair - was "beautiful" until the very end.

"'Jeb, I believe in Jesus and he is my savior, '" she told him.

Susan Baker, the wife of James Baker who served as secretary of state under former President George H.W. Bush., also paid tribute to her longtime friend, Barbara Bush, whom she called "Bar".

While Melania Trump and a host of other political figures travelled to Houston, Texas for Barbara Bush's funeral on Saturday, President Trump watched coverage of the event from his Mar-a-Lago resort.

Bush is survived by her husband, George H.W.; sons George W., Neil, Marvin and Jeb; daughter, Dorothy Bush Koch; and 17 grandchildren. He laughed as Meacham and others recalled his wife's wicked sense of humor.

Former Presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton, current first lady Melania Trump, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former first lady Michelle Obama were all on hand for the service.

Flags were flown at half-mast as the service began as the choir sang "My Country Tis of Thee". The church was adorned with sprays of yellow garden roses, yellow snap dragons, antique hydrangeas and other flowers.

Among the other roughly 1,500 guests were former Rep.

In a Twitter post, Trump said his "thoughts and prayers are with the entire Bush family". Instead, they gathered at the nearby Second Baptist Church, passed through security and then boarded buses that took them to and from St. Martin's.

Following the service, the hearse and family motorcade drove through Memorial Park, a special place for the Bushes.

She will be laid to rest next to her daughter Robin, who died of leukemia in 1953 when she was three years old.

The Bushes moved 29 times during their marriage but settled in Houston in 1959, according to the National First Ladies' Library. Bush's trademark piece of jewelry.
