Brazil's Lula Complies With Federal Judge's Arrest Warrant

The union building in an industrial suburb of Sao Paulo where Lula began his career as a labor leader was surrounded late into the night by thousands of supporters and members of his Workers Party wearing red shirts and waving red flags.

In chaotic scenes, scores of leftist activists swarmed around his auto and blocked the gate at the metalworkers' union building in Sao Bernardo do Campo, near Sao Paulo, forcing the 72-year-old two-term president to leave the vehicle.

This was sometime after upset supporters attempted to block the former leader from presenting himself to police, underscoring the raw emotions in Latin America's largest nation over his impending incarceration.

Meanwhile, another group was attempting to mob the vehicle itself.

The head of the Workers Party, Senator Gleisi Hoffmann, said Lula would take part in a Saturday morning mass at the union headquarters to commemorate the birthday of his late wife Marisa Leticia.

Da Silva, who Brazilians simply call "Lula", did no such thing.

"The intention is not to force compliance at any cost, but rather follow the order the best way possible, with tranquility and without a media show", Luis Antonio Boudens, president of the federal police, said in a statement.

In a fiery speech to a crowd of red-shirted supporters outside a steel workers union headquarters, Brazil's first working-class president insisted on his innocence and called his bribery conviction a political crime, but relented after a almost 24-hour standoff with authorities.

"I want to face them and look at them in their eyes", he said of his accusers.

After running for president several times, in 2002 da Silva finally won.

"I received an order from the appeal court, ordering the arrest so I just complied with the order". Moro is the main judge presiding over Brazil's "Car Wash" corruption investigation and has gained global recognition for holding some of Brazil's most powerful politicians accountable in the scandal. He left office with an approval rating higher than 80 percent.

"This is pinning Lula's political mobilization strength against the powers of the prosecutors and police", said David Fleischer, a professor and political expert at the University of Brasilia.

Bernardo do Campo, Brazil, Saturday, April 7, 2018.

Barbosa's anti-corruption credentials will help him draw votes away from centrist candidate Geraldo Alckmin of the Brazilian Social Democracy Party (PSDB) and environmentalist Marina Silva and help him reach the second-round run-off, Eurasia said. In August, the country's top electoral court makes final decisions about candidacies. Technically, beginning to serve his sentence would not keep da Silva off the ballot. It was expected to deny da Silva's candidacy under Brazil's "clean slate" law, which disqualifies people who have had criminal convictions upheld. He could appeal such a decision, though doing so from jail would be complicated.

Prof. Falcao said that the order from Judge Moro that Brazilians interpreted as an arrest warrant, was in fact a sort of invitation, and he would now need to issue another compelling the state to take the former president into custody. Over the last four years, Brazilians have seen near weekly police operations and arrests of the elite.

The renovation was bankrolled by a company seeking contracts with the state oil giant Petrobras.
