Dewey County Sheriff: 50 homes have burned in Rhea wildfire

Multiple fires burn throughout Kansas

A statement released Wednesday by the team managing operations against the fires northwest of Grants said crews held containment lines Tuesday despite the challenging conditions. Deb Beard said the forecast should "scare the hell out" of the firefighters in the area where fires have already killed at least two people and injured nine others. That blaze has burned about 106 square miles (275 sq. kilometers) and remains about 45 percent contained.

Officials say fires that crossed from Colorado into Kansas have been contained.

The fire risk is dropping in Kansas, where temperatures have dropped from highs in the lower to mid-80s (27-30 Celsius) to around 60 (15 Celsius).

The weather service says rain and thunderstorm chances will increase Thursday night and Friday with strong to severe storms possible in southwestern Oklahoma and western north Texas on Friday. Buller said the fire risk has shifted south into western Oklahoma.

A U.S. Forest Service commander at one of two large wildfires in Oklahoma has warned firefighters to be careful as forecasters warn of unsafe, life-threatening wildfires in parts of the Southwest and Southern Plains. Monday temperatures reached the mid-80s with humidity as low as 10 percent and wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour. North to northwest winds are forecast to be sustained at 15 to 20 miles per hour with 30 miles per hour or more gusts.

Several towns were evacuated Tuesday as weather conditions continued to fuel wildfires that have burned for more than six days.

The state forestry department said at least one fire on Tuesday was caused by a person who violated burn ban restrictions.

Extremely risky conditions continued to fuel historic wildfires in the western half of Oklahoma early Wednesday, reports CBS Oklahoma City affiliate KWTV.
