How Patriots' acquisition of a another first-round pick could impact Bills

Adam Schefter on Twitter:

Brandin Cooks, acquired along with a fourth-round pick for L.A.'s first-rounder (23rd overall) and a sixth-round pick, is a huge piece of this plan.

In the deal, New England also sends a fourth-round choice to the Rams, who give the Patriots a sixth-rounder.

This is a massive development, as previous reports from New England suggested that the team was going to possibly trade tight end Rob Gronkowski.

This is a developing story. Cooks is entering the final year of the deal, and the Patriots were reportedly disinclined to sign him to a longer-term contract, a decision the Rams will now have to make.

Cooks, a 24-year-old Stockton native, was drafted by New Orleans, then traded to New England in March 2017.

The Los Angeles Rams have already landed Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib and Ndamukong Suh to their star-studded team, but general manager Les Snead has made off another major deal. Needs at linebacker and cornerback could also be possible picks for the Patriots. The difference in draft capital between the Bills and Patriots is the equivalent of an extra first-round pick on the various draft value charts.

Cooks finished up his first season in New England as the teams primary receiver.

The Patriots, as things now stand, are also well-positioned to draft a wide receiver, should they so choose.

Yet when the competitive receiver apparently disagreed with the Saints about the height of his abilities and his long-term future, he was traded to New England 13 months ago for a first-rounder and other picks.

On Tuesday night, the National Football League rumors heated up with reports of a New England Patriots trade. With Julian Edelman sidelined for the season, Cooks put up 65 receptions for 1,082 yards and seven touchdowns.

The real story from this trade is the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft.

If that's what it takes to move up three spots, imagine what it would take the Patriots to move up say 10-15 spots to get a quarterback?

Having just two picks in the first 63 over the last three drafts, Belichick has four this year, and you can imagine how giddy he is about that.
