National Drug Take Back set for Saturday The take back is set for Saturday April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m

Arkansas Drug Take-Back Day is a twice-a-year event sponsored by 25 groups, including state agencies such as the Arkansas Department of Health, law enforcement, medical associations and environmental groups. With more than 150 authorized collection sites located throughout the state, residents are encouraged to clean out their cabinets and keep their families safe from the leading method through which unused and expired prescriptions are obtained and misused. "All prescription medications-especially addictive opioid painkillers-should be disposed of safely to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands".

The Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD) is also taking part in National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day during the same time frame as KSP. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, enough prescriptions were written that year to medicate every adult American across the country 24 hours a day for an entire month.

Properly discarding unused medications is an important ongoing event in the effort to address the nationwide opioid epidemic.

On Drug Take-Back Day, drugs for disposal must be in a container such as a pill bottle, box, blister pack, or zipped plastic bag, with personal information removed.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the US are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. But, nearly everything else is: "pills, liquids, ointments, even pet medications.they'll take", Leitzinger said.

Pills and patches will be accepted, liquids and needles will be declined.

During last year's drug take back events in Utah almost 34,000 pounds of drugs were collected. "Studies have shown that medicines that remain in the home are highly susceptible to misuse".

The service is free and open to the public.
