Passenger train travels 10km without engine in India

This terrifying footage shows a runaway train carrying around 1,000 terrified passengers freewheeling backwards for more than six miles after separating from its engine.

According to the Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani, the incident was an isolated one due to the staff negligence.

In a odd incident that could have led to a major tragedy, at least 22 coaches of an express train with passengers on board to travel over 15 km without an engine in Odisha late on Saturday night.

The train comprised of Twenty two engine-less coaches with all the passengers on board had to travel a distance of almost 10 kilometres before railway employees managed to salvage the situation by placing stones on the track and brought the train to a halt.

At Titlagarh, the engine reversal of this train was conducted. JP Mishra, spokesperson for the railway ministry, told AFP news agency an investigation has been launched.

The direction of the coaches where it travelled towards was Kesinga in Kalahandi district starting from Titlagarh station which is around 380 kilometeres from Odisha's capital Bhubaneswar.

Railway staff notified the control room immediately as the train started rolling away, Gupta said.

Soon after the incident, an engine was sent from Titlagarh to ferry the coaches back, he said.

In November, three people died when 13 coaches of an express train derailed in northern India in an incident.

Reports say that seven railway workers - including the train's two drivers - have been suspended pending a safety inquiry.

Authorities believe that brakes normally applied when carriages are detached or attached to an engine were either incorrectly used or overlooked altogether. In this case, it appears that the skids have either not been placed or placed improperly. Safety is non-negotiable and can not be compromised.

"While the concerned staff has been suspended and a high-level probe has also been ordered, the IR remains committed to ensuring highest levels of safety in train operations", the Central Railway said in a statement in Mumbai on Monday. More than 22 million passengers commute on 9,000 Indian trains every day.
