"The events of the last days teach that standing up to evil and aggression is a mission that is incumbent upon every generation", Netanyahu said at the opening ceremony of Israel's annual Holocaust commemorations. "This regime explicitly declares that it intends to destroy us - the Jewish state".

Israel is on high alert for any Iranian retaliation after Tehran's direct threat Tuesday, as well as any possible USA strike against Syria's Assad regime in retaliation to the chemical attack at Douma. But in Israel, evidence that Iran is entrenching just across its northeastern border has caused seriousworry.

Shortly before his speech at Yad Vashem, Netanyahu called Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the Syria situation in the wake of the attack. During the conversation, the prime minister reiterated that Israel would not allow a Iranian military buildup in Syria.

Syria and its top allies Iran and Russian Federation say Israel was behind the air strike, which Tel Aviv has neither confirmed nor denied.

Israeli army officials said Israel would overthrow the Assad government if Iran attacked Israel through Syria.

Syria's T-4 military airbase, in the central province of Homs, was hit by an air strike on Monday. That is what happened with the Munich Agreement and that is what is happening with the nuclear accords. At the same time he sent a message to the Iranian people that Israel is not its enemy. Instead it is "the regime of tyranny that oppresses you".

Israel is not alone in ramping up the rhetoric.

"In light of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which is observed on April 12, both leaders unambiguously declared again that attempts to distort history and revise the results of World War Two are unacceptable", the Kremlin continued.

Paul Goldman reported from Tel Aviv, Israel, F. Brinley Bruton reported from London and Ali Arouzi from Tehran.
