Reports on new air base bombings a false alarm

Defense Secretary Mattis said at the time that no follow-up attacks were planned and that the Pentagon was careful to ensure the safety of Russian troops and Syrian civilians in the area.

Neither the Pentagon, which led punitive strikes on Syrian regime targets at the weekend, nor Israel, which was blamed for an earlier strike on a Syrian air base earlier this month, claimed responsibility.

The fresh attack comes as the US, France, and Britain launched a missile strike on Syrian military positions in the capital Damascus and in Homs last Saturday over the same allegations of chemical weapons' use by the Syrian government forces.

Reports in government-run media earlier on Tuesday claimed missiles were fired at an air base in the Homs area, while a media unit run by the Lebanese group Hezbollah said missiles had also targeted an air base near Damascus.

The Shayrat airbase has been struck by 59 U.S. Tomahawk cruise missiles this past year.

Syrian air defences are responding to a new series of strikes, according to multiple news reports published on Monday night.

Syrian media is now attributing the incident to a false alarm, and not a missile strike from an unknown attacker.

State TV had shown pictures of a missile it said was shot in the air above the air base.

It didn't say who carried out the early Tuesday airstrikes.

The tripartite Western aggression occurred days after the United States accused the Syrian government of an alleged attack with chemical weapons in the city of Duma, Eastern Ghouta region, an accusation rejected by the authorities of this country.

Some reports pointed fingers at Israel, which carried similar attacks in the past against Iranian interests directly or their proxy presence in Syria.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov described it as a "provocation" and a "very unsafe development".
