Sen. Paul's Flip Flop on Pompeo Angers His Base

Sen. Paul's Flip Flop on Pompeo Angers His Base

"Mike Pompeo has no major, disqualifying flaw", Brooks explained.

"What I heard from him in private - and what I think we'll hear from him in public - is that regime change really hasn't worked that well in the Middle East", Mr. Paul, Kentucky Republican, said on Fox News. It had appeared going in to that committee vote that there might not be enough votes for approval, but Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Sen.

Illustrating this uphill battle, the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted narrowly to endorse Pompeo after a dramatic last minute switch by Sen.

There will be some showboating, of course, but we would guess the full Senate will also vote to confirm.

"He (Pompeo) is trusted by the president", Tennessee Republican Lamar Alexander told VOA.

His absence resulted in a tie along party lines among the Foreign Relations Committee, meaning Isakson would have to return for a vote later in the night.

"I was happy to do that for a friend", Senator Coons commented.

And he's said that publicly.

Local news service Financial News reported Monday Kim will be given the highest welcome by Moon that includes a ceremony, a state banquet and other gestures reserved for top guests. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN, and Joe Manchin of West Virginia said they would vote yes. And when he was confirmed as Central Intelligence Agency director, he had the support of 14 Senate Democrats, including Donnelly.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un (C) visits the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun to pay tribute to President Kim Il Sung and leader Kim Jong Il, on the birth anniversary of Kim Il Sung (known in North Korea as "The Day of the Sun") in Pyongyang, North Korea, on April 15, 2018.

Many political landscape experts thought that Mike Pompeo's attempt to make it through the approval of United States Congress would have been incredibly hard, potentially even failing to bring home a positive recommendation from the 20-deep Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The Democratic leader said that while he was "disappointed" in Pompeo's committee hearing, the two had "very good discussions" and he was "pleasantly surprised" by Pompeo's stance on Russian Federation and sanctions.

The senator said he had spoken with the president about Pompeo's support of the Iraq war and the US presence in Afghanistan.

But politically, the tone for Pompeo's tenure will be set in part by how his floor vote stacks up against that of his predecessor, Rex Tillerson, who was ousted earlier this year. The entire Republican Senate caucus, and at least three Democrats from states won by President Trump, are expected to vote for confirmation. But he noted that the strength of Pompeo's bipartisan mandate will be "historically low" and "will mean a reinforcement of the partisan divide on foreign policy". What makes this vote any different? "But if he takes over the State Department without the panel's recommendation, he'll be the first secretary of state to do so after such a tentative endorsement from Capitol Hill". Pompeo has promised the first.
