Syrian air defence shoots down missiles over Homs: state media

Chemical weapons investigators are due to travel Wednesday to the site of a suspected Syrian chemical weapon attack in Douma, if it's safe enough, according Syria's ambassador to the UN.

After Russian forces refused to let inspectors into the alleged chemical attack site in Syria, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is now being allowed access.

The reported strike comes days after the US, UK and France bombed Syrian military facilities over a suspected gas attack in Douma.

The OPCW visit to Douma came hours after Syrian media reported airstrikes Tuesday on government military installations in the central Homs region and the suburbs of Damascus, but the military later said a false alarm had set off air defense systems.

Initial talks were held on the text on Monday.

"They will go directly to any sort of companies that were dealing with equipment related to Assad and chemical weapons use", Haley said.

Syrian activists said more than 40 people were killed in the alleged attack.

The Syrian government regained full control of Douma on Saturday, following a surrender deal with the rebels who had controlled the town just east of Damascus.

The U.S. and France say they have evidence that Syrian President Bashar Assad's forces used poison gas in the attack, but they have not provided any evidence, even after Saturday's punitive missile strikes. A odd smell lingered, nine days after the attack.

At the first site, the United Nations team and the Russian military escort "encountered a large peaceful demonstration" while at the second location "there was an explosion followed by small-arms fire directed at UNDSS team and the Russian military police", said the report.

Uzumcu says the incident Tuesday, "again highlights the highly volatile environment in which the FFM (Fact-Finding Mission) is having to work and the security risks our staff are facing". US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council "there is clear information demonstrating Assad's culpability".

"The idea of creating a mechanism on attributing responsibility for the use of chemical weapons no longer makes any sense when Washington and its allies have already determined who's guilty and in essence are already acting like self-appointed executioners", Nebenzia said.

Moscow denied the charge and blamed delays on retaliatory USA -led missile strikes on Syria at the weekend.

Rebels who once held the town abandoned it this month.

The U.S. State Department has accused the Syrian government and its ally Russian Federation of trying to cover up the alleged April 7 attack.

United States officials have raised concerns that Russian Federation, or the Syrian government, might have tampered with the site.
