Uber agrees to expanded settlement with FTC over 2016 data breach

Uber adds safety features to app including direct dial to 911

Soon after that, the now-current CEO of the ride-sharing firm found that his company had hidden evidence of an separate extortion-based attack that exposed "25 million names and email addresses, 22 million names and mobile phone numbers, and 600,000 names and driver's license numbers of US Uber drivers and riders", according to the FTC.

Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber ( @dkhos ) writing this week around these announcements: "Having a greater variety of transportation modes at your fingertips helps make it increasingly easy to live without a auto".

Uber chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi has been extra busy lately making himself the kinder, gentler face of the ride-hailing giant.

Uber will conduct its annual background checks through a company called Checkr starting in the next few weeks.

FIguring that it's the millennial generation who'll be driving transportation's future, Uber's plans make flawless sense for both its business model and customer base. These include Boston, Portland, New Jersey and Washington.

"Furthermore, the fall 2016 breach occurred while Uber was in discussions with the FTC about its investigation of the May 2014 breach, which also related to the company's practices for securing consumer data stored on the third-party cloud service".

Uber stated it considers bicycles and public transport for an easy method to cut back on traffic and environmental congestion.

The company is also investing in technology that can identify new criminal offenses via public records or pending DUI charges as they happen.

"We were not flawless", Khosrowshahi said.

Uber, however, has clearly not stopped its focus on becoming the app that helps to move people around cities.

Khosrowshahi said the company has suspended its fleet of self-driving cars as it continues to probe what went wrong.

To get there, the company is starting a pilot program in D.C.to share "curb usage" data across all modes of transportation.

"Ultimately, self-driving cars will be safer than human drivers", he said.

The company said it anticipates expanding its vehicle rental program outside San Francisco, according Jahan Khanna, head of product for mobility at Uber. And he suggested Uber and other tech companies like Facebook built their platforms in the first place for "idealistic" reasons. "I want you to be able to take an Uber and get into the subway... get out and have an Uber waiting for you".

"I walked over", Khosrowshahi replied.

-This blog has been updated to clarify Khosrowshahi's remarks on continuously monitoring drivers; a previous version suggested incorrectly that this would involve monitoring trip data.
