Volkswagen to install 2000 fast chargers across United States by end of 2019

Electrify America will install electric vehicle fast chargers at more than 100 Walmart locations across 34 states by June 2019.

The Electrify America charging systems located at Walmart stores will offer the first certified cooled-cable 150 to 350 kilowatt (kW) DC Fast Chargers. Needless to say, VW is future-proofing the investment.

According to Bentonville, Ark. -based Walmart, several of the new EV charging station units will feature super-fast chargers that can charge a auto in between 10 to 30 minutes.

"Along with providing our customers with an enhanced shopping experience through added convenience, this initiative also allows us to contribute to the expansion of our nation's EV charging station infrastructure", said Mark Vanderhelm, Vice President of Energy at Walmart, said in a statement. VW recently doubled down on their goals to grow EV sales in the U.S.by announcing that it will be investing millions of dollars in developing a charging infrastructure. While you may think that the 100 stores are nothing compared to Walmart's over 5,000 store network, it's a great start. By having charging stations at as many large retailers as possible, you'll be likely to use your EV more often and not have to worry that you don't have enough juice left in your vehicle.

Tesla isn't the only company developing convenient electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions.

Not all EVs and PHEVs will be able to use the maximum power offered by the Electrify America technology, so, for some, charging times will be significantly slower.

As an innovator and provider of a wide range of products and solutions in sustainable electric mobility, ABB is a logical choice for participating in the Electrify America effort - and it will be the largest deployment of ABB high power chargers to date. Each will be equipped with a 15-inch touchscreen display and use a "Plug-Pay-Charge-Go" approach to let motorists quickly connect and pay for the energy they purchase.

Volkswagen isn't the only automaker bringing electric power accessibility to the people.

VW has agreed to spend $800 million in California and a total of $2 billion nationwide on clean vehicle infrastructure as part of its agreement after admitting to diesel emissions cheating. "EV owners need a convenient, reliable and fast turnaround in recharging their vehicles". And with more than 6,500 DC fast charging stations installed in 60 countries, ABB is leading globally in connected DC fast charging technology. Among others, Ford and General Motors are also planning to help fund charging networks across the U.S. And Tesla has been expanding its own supercharger network across North America, as well as in Europe and China.
