Waffle House: Information about Alabama woman's arrest 'strongly supports' police actions

Saraland Police arrested Chikesia Clemons at a Waffle House in Alabama on Sunday

The detective declined to comment on the reason for the arrest or any of what the video appears to show, saying the department will be releasing more information late on Monday.

When police officers arrived, they can be seen tackling Clemons to the ground after an exchange.

She was taken to a local police station and charged with disorderly conduct.

During the disturbing incident, which was caught on camera, Clemons was wrestled to the ground, which exposed her breasts.

Police tape blocks off a Waffle House restaurant Sunday, April 22, 2018, in Nashville, Tenn.

"The Saraland Police Department is aware of the arrest at Waffle House and the accompanying video on social media", the statement said.

The president of Mobile's NAACP branch, David Smith, said on Facebook that he was "disturbed" and drew a comparison with the arrests of two black men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia earlier this month.

In the video, one officer is holding Clemons' right shoulder and wrist as she sits in a chair in the Waffle House.

According to AL.com, the altercation began after the three unidentified officers entered the establishment just as Clemons was waiting for an employee to give her the contact information of the restaurant's district manager. Her top slips as the officers turn her over while she is lying on the floor, exposing her breasts. It's not clear from the video why she is being arrested in the first place. Clemons thought she was waiting for the district manager's business card, she said, but instead was met by cops and handcuffed minutes later.

The dispute started when a Waffle House associate tried to bill Clemons 50 cents for plastic utensils, Clemons' mother, Chiquitta Clemons-Howard, told AL.com.

An announcement by the Saraland Police Department claims the public safety director and mayor of the city are attentive to movie and the arrest, that gained traction.

"I$3 t's fair to say that the information we have received at this point differs significantly from what has reportedly been attributed to Ms. Clemons and strongly supports the actions taken by the Saraland Police Department", Warner said.

"Kiki was there with her friend and they had no problem being given the plastic", he said.

"Why are you doing this to me?"

"Our department strives for transparency and we encourage our community to be aware of current events", the statement read. Responding to the woman's distressed questions about why she's being treated this way, the officer shouts back "I'll break your arm, that's what I'm about to do". Howard told ABC News he paid $150 of her $1,500 bail to free her.

"In light of the current situation in our country - such as the arrest of two young black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks coffee shop - we felt it was important for our members to get a first-hand account of the incident, which has now gone viral on social media locally and across the country", Smith said.
