Windrush generation will get United Kingdom citizenship, says Amber Rudd

But the letter written the then immigration minister James Brokenshire, set out to Labour MP Kate Hoey how the policy impacted on Trevor and Desmond Johnson

She told MPs she wanted people to have the "formal status" they should have had all along, without having to pay naturalisation fees or pass any tests.

"This is an excellent move, and it not only answers the questions persons have been asking but certainly delivers what we have been calling for and what Prime Minister Andrew Holness and other CARICOM heads had asked for -that there be some compensatory relief [and that] certainly the citizenship to which those persons are entitled will be granted".

The letter, written in May 2016 by a Home Office Minister, will refuel a row about whether Home Secretary Amber Rudd should resign.

Elaborating, Blackford said that Theresa May also had direct responsibility for the situation through her leading role in developing the government's immigration policy.

The Financial Times says her stance "immediately came in for criticism", with shadow home secretary Diane Abbott insisting the problems facing the Windrush generation were a predicted effect of the 2014 Immigration Act, pushed through by Theresa May.

She said: "It could have been my family, my grandfather arrived here in the fifties and my parents arrived here in the sixties, and I know growing up the paranoia that they had about paperwork and passports".

He went on to ask: "What more can the Home Secretary do not only to address the legitimate grievances of the Windrush generation, but to prevent this from being repeated with legal migration from elsewhere, be it the sub-continent or the European Union?" "None of this can undo the pain already endured, but I hope it demonstrates the government's commitment to put these wrongs right going forward".

She said that officials would take a "proactive and generous" approach, and would not need documentation that proved a... "The Home Secretary has to understand that ultimately the buck stops with her". We've lost money, I've lost money, I'm in arrears with certain bills. "In particular I will be reallocating £10m (including from low-level crime and intelligence) with the aim of increasing the number of enforced removals by more than 10 per cent over the next few years".

Ms Rudd said Home Office official were manually trawling through more than 8,000 records dating back to 2002 to establish whether any Windrush-era immigrants to the United Kingdom had been wrongly deported.

"Many people think the events around the Windrush generation are one of the biggest scandals in the administration of home affairs in a very long time", she said.

Media captionExplained: What is the "hostile environment" policy?

In a statement to MPs following days of damaging headlines and condemnation of the government 's treatment of Windrush families, Rudd also promised a speedy compensation process for those who had suffered hardship as a result of the immigration process.

"This was a generation with unparalleled commitment to this country, unparalleled pride in being British, unparalleled commitment to contributing to society and hard work, and it is shameful that this Government has treated this generation in this way".

Supporters carry placards at the tail-end of a Windrush generation solidarity protest in Brixton, London on April 20, 2018.

Labour's David Lammy, a leading campaigner for justice for Windrush families, said they were being offered something which was already their right.

"They are from countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Ghana and Uganda", he said.

People who arrived in the country between 1973 and 1988 will also be supported to access the most suitable route to regularise their status. "It is unfair. They were born under Empire".
