Alberto expected to weaken as storm moves through Alabama, Tennessee

Current Temperatures DMA

Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect along the entire Gulf Coast.

Monday morning, Alberto was moving at about 6 mph -down from 14 mph and then 12 mph on Sunday- with maximum sustained winds of about 65 mph.

The storm's effects were being felt in South Florida, in the Keys and across the state, with 1 to 3 inches of more rain expected Monday, forecasters said, in areas already saturated from an above-normal rainfall in May.

Forecasters said Alberto could bring unsafe high water to southern coastal states when it douses an area from MS to western Georgia with up to 12 inches (30 cm) of rain and possible tornadoes. The weather service has issued flash flood warnings across most of Northern Alabama and Georgia and Southeast Tennessee today because of the additional rains forecast from Alberto.

USA forecasters said rain could still cause unsafe flash floods in the coming days in northern Alabama and large areas of Georgia, Tennessee and the Carolinas.

Tropical downpours will move northward into NCFL starting on Sunday. Eventually the upper low will act to pull Alberto back to the North-northwest later Sunday.

Winds from the storm are forecast to hit Florida's Panhandle on Sunday night.

The storm's maximum sustained winds are near 45 miles per hour.

It is forecast to drop as much as 30cm (12in) of rain across MS to western Georgia and to bring storm swells of about 60-120cm (2-4ft) to low-lying areas.

Alberto got an early jump on the 2018 hurricane season, which doesn't officially start until June 1.

Alberto was moving north at 9 miles per hour and will continue to weaken as it moves north into Alabama then into the Tennessee Valley, where it's expected to pour heavy rain across that area throughout the rest of week. "Some spots could see upwards of 4-5" of rain, which would lead to flash flooding issues. It is still a subtropical storm, meaning that it does not have all of the characteristics of a purely tropical system and is more of a hybrid cyclone.

While showers and thunderstorms are expected on Monday, skies will be mostly cloudy, and the high should be near 86 degrees. "The rain that's widespread over us now is going to shift north of us, so we'll be left with just scattered thunderstorms".

Moore said the rainy weather late this month is expected to push the Columbia area past its average precipitation for May, typically one of the state's driest months.
