Cannes Film Festival opens with glitz and glamour

Trump, Iranian director and 'pesky' journos collide on Cannes opening night

CANNES, France: Spanish film royalty, Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, walked the red carpet to open the Cannes Film Festival on Tuesday with their film "Everybody Knows", written and directed by Iranian double-Oscar victor Asghar Farhadi. Hollywood star couple Bardem and Cruz are the stand-outs, while Ricado Darin also provides striking support as the tormented father-figure in Alejandro, as does Bárbara Lennie as Victoria, Paco's wife.

It was interesting to note that the festival organisers kept the red carpet selfie free.

"Farhadi's weakest film yet is still better than the vast majority of commercially made dramas in Spain, France or the United States", wrote Variety critic Peter Debruge. "But these things are not going to happen overnight". As it was, the jury had to "deal with what we have in front of us".

However, Cruz added: "It's not something we plan on doing every two years".

On the heels of his second Academy Award victor The Salesman following his first for A Separation, Asghar Farhadi wrote and directed this Spanish-language psychological thriller starring Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem and Ricardo Darín.

In Cannes took place the official opening ceremony of the Cannes film festival-2018.

Blanchett noted the festival has improved the gender parity of its selection committees.

Fremaux rejected criticism that Blanchett's appointment as jury head had been a quick PR fix.

Actress in Cannes repeated the image four years ago. Only one female filmmaker, Jane Campion, has won the Palme.

Lasting change, Blanchett said, will only occur through specific actions over time to narrow the gender gap and improve diversity in the world of filmmaking.

The festival has set up a helpline for women who experience harassment during the event and is supporting a series of seminars about women's representation in the film industry.

Now the first night is over, Blanchett will get to work with fellow jury members, like Kristen Stewart and filmmakers Denis Villeneuve and Ava DuVernay, to pick the victor of the prestigious Palme D'Or prize at the end of the festival next week.
