Death toll of Pakistan's coal mine collapses rises to 23

In a separate accident, a gas blast led to the collapse of a coal mine in Margit area near Quetta, which killed two persons and left 13 others injured. All the victims were hospitalized.

Two workers were rescued in an unconscious state, while bodies of two miners were recovered last night, an official said.

Rescue teams, including Personnel of Frontier Corps, Levies and Quick Response Force, were immediately called on the site.

Miners gather outside the collapsed mine in Marwaarh area, 45 kilometres east of Quetta, the capital of oil and gas-rich Balochistan province, Pakistan, on May 5, 2018. Numerous trapped miners were rescued in an unconscious state and shifted to the nearby hospital.

"We have also rescued six workers who are trapped in the rubble and have sent them to hospital for treatment but one miner is still trapped under the rubble", he said. Due to hard terrain, rescue efforts were hampered. However, the reports could not be verified independently. Rescue efforts were underway.

Accidents are frequent in the province's mines and are mainly due to inadequate safety measures.

Officials said the death toll might rise as at least five people were trapped under the debris of the collapsed mine. Seven people died and two were wounded.

There were 30 labourers inside the mine when the explosion occurred.

Earlier this week, six labourers working on network installation for a private telecommunication company were shot dead by unidentified men in Kharan district. Supreme Court (SC) issued notices to Balochistan chief secretary and Inspector General of Police (IGP) and will hear the case at Quetta Registry on May 11.
