Decision to DFA Harvey was 'a long time coming — Mets GM

Noah Syndergaard knows he has more to give and a plan for how

The Mets tried to send him down to the minors, but Harvey refused, and the team had no choice but to designate him for assignment.

However Harvey was having none of it so they made a decision to designate him for assignment.

At the moment, it is jarring for its tense - for the fact that Harvey will not take the field again in blue and orange, that at some point in the next seven days he will be elsewhere, that he is now a relic of New York's past.

"This was a long time coming", Alderson said at a press conference Friday.

"The move to the bullpen was dramatic in itself", Alderson said. "His stuff just wasn't playing the way it should and there were some mechanical issues". "We thought, from our evaluation in spring training, we could get him to where we wanted him to be and we didn't". We feel like we failed Matt Harvey. I think our job is to help every player in there, and it's not a good feeling when you can't. Obviously, there were challenges along the way for him and for us.

After Harvey lost his spot in the starting rotation and struggled during four bullpen outings, the Mets held a meeting with him at 3:15 p.m. ET on Friday and asked him to consider working things out in the minors.

Harvey underwent Tommy John surgery in October 2013 and missed the entire 2014 season. He debuted for NY in 2012 and quickly reached star status, recording a 2.73 ERA over 59 2/3 innings pitched. He was an All-Star in 2013 and finished fourth in the NL Cy Young voting that season.

The 29-year old right-hander only produced two seasons with a record over.500 and in 2017 he set a new record for highest ERA by any pitcher in Mets franchise history.
