Here comes the bank holiday sun with record temperatures set for Monday

UK weather met office

She added: "On the whole it looks like a fine and sunny bank holiday for most".

Met Office forecaster Craig Snell told BBC: '23.6C is what we've got to beat, and we're forecasting highs of at least 26C, 27C, possibly 28C, so I think we can safely say that's going to be beaten. However, it's looking like a most of us will get to see some warm sunshine at times'.

While the record for the hottest Bank Holiday Monday was set in 1999, the hottest bank holiday weekend ever was in 1995 when temperatures peaked on the Saturday at 28.6C (83.5F).

Tonight: Cloudy across the far north with patchy rain across northern and western Scotland. Widespread temperatures will be in the low to mid 20s.

The day is set to be dry, with lengthy periods of warm sunshine.

The South East can expect the highest temperatures, while Wales and Scotland will also see those in the mid to high 70s.

There may even be the odd isolated thunderstorm in the east and the south. Warm air is due from continental Europe.

Temperatures will reach between 16 and 18 degrees in most parts of the county, although it will be cooler near coasts.

That is hotter than the French Riviera and the Costa del Sol!, where Malaga is forecasting highs of 22C. Marrakech in Morocco is only forecast to reach 73F (23C).

Unfortunately the good weather probably won't last long.

Eastern areas like Aberdeen and Edinburgh should fare better with highs of around 21C but the best of the weather is set for southern parts of England.

It comes just a week after the country was caught out by downpours and plummeting temperatures.

In Kent, firemen cut one man free from his auto after he became trapped by a fallen tree and two parents and their baby were rescued after their vehicle was caught in a flood.

Trains were cancelled as engineers struggled to reopen lines hit by flooding and fallen trees.
