Man accused of child murder 31 years ago is arrested in IL

Suspect arrested in 1986 murder and rape of Tacoma’s Jennifer Bastian Jennifer Bastian

Friends of Jennifer Bastian, the 13-year-old girl raped and murdered more than 30 years ago in Tacoma, are reacting to police saying the suspect charged in the case was on their radar for almost the entire time. The ISP helped assist the Tacoma, Washington police department with the apprehension. 60 year old Robert Washburn was arrested for the 1986 death of Jenniffer Bastian.

Tacoma Police are in the process of extraditing him back to Washington.

He has been billed with murder.

Over 30 years later, a man accused of killing a Washington girl in 1986 is behind bars after authorities obtained a DNA match.

On the day she vanished, Jennifer, a keen cyclist who was eager to train for an upcoming race, asked her dad if she could take her bike to the park.

The passing resembled the murder of the 12-year-old woman called Michella Welch, that was abducted in a Tacoma park in March of this season.

The call made Washburn a suspect in Bastian's case, Ausserer wrote, and by the end of 1986, investigators had questioned him. The 13 year-old was found dead in a wooded area, weeks after riding her bike to a park in Tacoma.

A six strong task force put in at least 10,000 investigative hours in the hunt for her killer and DNA tests have been run on evidence since 1988. Welch's murder is still unsolved.

He agreed but only if she called him when she arrived back home.

In 2013, the Washington State Patrol Crime Lab was able to develop a DNA profile of the suspect from semen discovered on the bathing suit Bastian had been wearing before she was killed. The profile has been checked against a national database of felons, however, failed to go back a game. They're still looking for tips and examining case files.

Welch's killing remains unsolved. In the quiet Eureka neighborhood where Washburn had lived for 13 years people tell WMBD they had trouble sleeping last night and coming to terms that an alleged murderer lived among them for more then a decade. While authorities initially believed the two cases might be linked, DNA analysis performed in 2016 showed otherwise, according to The (Tacoma) News Tribune.
