MI5 thwarting monthly terror attacks in United Kingdom, warns spy chief

Andrew Parker Director General of MI5 will launch a scathing verbal assault on Russia during a speech in Berlin when he addresses European security chiefs

European intelligence chiefs warned Monday that Russian Federation is actively seeking to undermine their democracies by disinformation, cyberattacks and more traditional means of espionage.

Mr Parker is expected to warn that Daesh - also known as Islamic State - still aspires to direct "devastating" and "more complex" attacks despite territorial losses, in the wake of 45 attacks across Europe since 2016.

MI5 Director general Andrew Parker is set to speak at a meeting for European security chiefs in Berlin on Monday, where he will accuse Russia of being behind the poisoning attack in March against a Russian ex-spy and his daughter in Salisbury, according to BBC.

"In today's uncertain world, we need that shared strength more than ever", Parker, who gives very few public speeches, will say.

Next Tuesday the United Kingdom will mark one year since the Manchester Arena bombing, which killed 22 people attending a concert.

In 2017, the United Kingdom suffered five attacks: in March, a man drove into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge in London and attempted to enter the Westminster Palace grounds; in May, an explosion went off at the Manchester Arena at the end of the concert of U.S. singer Ariana Grande.

He will describe how the Counter Terrorism Group, which is made up of 30 European domestic security services, is the "largest multinational counter-terrorism enterprise in the world".

He said Moscow was the chief protagonist among "hostile actors", adding its actions risked making it a "more isolated pariah".

In a speech in Berlin on Monday, he told European intelligence agencies how Russian Federation had come up with at least 30 different explanations for the poisoning of former spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury in March.

Britain said the Skripals were attacked with a military-grade nerve agent from the Novichok group of poisons, developed by the Soviet Union in the 1970s and 80s.

The head of MI5 has hit out at Russian Federation over the Salisbury nerve agent attack and accused the Kremlin of committing "flagrant breaches of worldwide rules".

Russian officials suggested the United Kingdom had carried out the attack to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.

The thwarted attacks include alleged plans to carry out carnage at tourist attractions, pop concerts and government buildings.
