North Korea silent about June summit with USA in Singapore

"We thank God and all our families and friends who prayed for us and for our return". "I said, 'Welcome home.' He said, 'God bless America, '" Hook said. But Singapore is a very valued USA partner and a remarkable city-state that punches many times above its weight. President Trump made brief remarks, saying "his proudest achievement will be - this is a part of it - but my proudest achievement will be when we denuclearize" North Korea.

All of which is to say that there's little doubt that Trump is in way over his head.

"We hope that this summit will successfully bring denuclearization and lasting peace to the Korean Peninsula", Kim Eui-kyeom, a presidential spokesman, said in a text message to reporters. The unannounced meeting was the second between the two men in recent weeks, following Kim's March visit to Beijing, his first since taking power six years ago.

CNN reported Wednesday that administration officials have been instructed to move forward with plans to convene that meeting in Singapore, according to two people familiar with the plans. "We hope the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula as well as permanent peace on the peninsula will successfully come about through this summit". The Kim family released the following statement: "We are grateful for the release of our husband and father, Tony Kim, and the other two American detainees", it said.

The hostages described being subjected to hard labor by the regime, and one of the detainees, according to an account relayed to Vice President Mike Pence from Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, had asked to see the sun rise in Anchorage because "he hadn't seen daylight in a very long time", Pence said.

The breakthrough came after landmark talks between North and South Korea.

State Department officials have taken great pains to keep three former North Korean detainees sequestered as they are flown back to the mainland United States.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo flew to North Korea earlier in the week to complete the summit's details and negotiate the release of three Americans held captive in North Korea.

Kim Dong-chul was arrested on suspicion of espionage in 2015, while Kim Hak-song and Tony Kim, who had worked at Pyongyang University of Science and Technology, were detained past year. "What a blessing. They would have sat there for years and years", Lindell said.

Speaking to reporters, Pompeo said his meetings in Pyongyang were "very productive".

Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop is hopeful the meeting will be a circuit-breaker for North Korea's illegal behaviour. The country also hosts a major worldwide port and a logistics headquarters for the United States Navy.

Abe said after Wednesday's summit that his country will seek to normalize ties with North Korea if the nuclear and missile issues, along with that of the abduction of Japanese citizens, are solved comprehensively. "This is not the result of sanctions that have been imposed from outside". They were released as a goodwill gesture in the run up to the summit.

"We should hold off on awarding ourselves Nobel prizes".

But despite the optimism of that moment, all efforts to limit North Korea's nuclear programme have, to date, failed.
