Storm Alberto: State of EMERGENCY issued as huge storms smash into US

Heavy rainfall is forecast to continue early Monday, with scattered thunderstorms into the afternoon.

"Today we will likely have some tropical moisture pushed our way from a system in the Gulf of Mexico", said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner.

The storm is expected to spin up multiple tornadoes as it marches inland after making landfall this afternoon.

Subtropical Storm Alberto is expected to remain well west of North Carolina, but the storm is helping to steer heavy rain to the Triangle on Memorial Day.

The threat for strong storms and widespread heavy rain decreases for Wednesday. Finally, on Friday, it appears that another inch of rain will be possible.

Jason Powell said he was seeking to keep his children entertained until Alberto blows through his Florida Panhandle vacation spot. "The highest wind gust was reported on St. George Island, Florida at 59 miles per hour", she said.

Tuesday was the 5th straight day with a high of 85° or warmer. Showers should be relatively light, with the exception of an isolated storm or two. The storm spun up days before the formal June 1 start of the hurricane season.

Gov. Roy Cooper issued a statement calling on North Carolina residents from the mountains to the coast to watch the weather and be prepared.

Deadly hurricanes in the United States and the Caribbean past year caused hundreds of billions of dollars in damage, massive power outages and devastation to hundreds of thousands of structures.

Kennon says red flags are flying along the beaches to caution people against going in the water and officials are patrolling to make sure people din't ignore the warnings.

Subtropical Storm Alberto's gusty rain and brisk winds roiled the seas off the U.S. Gulf Coast on Monday, keeping white sandy beaches emptied of their usual Memorial Day crowds.

Jeffrey Medlin, meteorologist in charge at the National Weather Service's Mobile office, warned that even after the storm passes there will still be swells that could cause risky rip currents.

Mississippi, Florida and Alabama have declared states of emergency ahead of the storm's arrival. Breezy conditions are also expected.

As of Monday at 8 a.m., the storm was located about 165 miles south-southeast of Destin.

Up to 1 inch of rainfall is possible area wide, with some locally higher amounts possible.

Thousands have been evacuated from the coast of Florida as the region braces for subtropical storm Alberto.

TVA is already spilling water through its dams downstream of Chattanooga at Nickajack, Guntersville, Pickwick and Kentucky dams and could begin spilling at the Chickamauga Dam in Chattanooga and the Watts Bar dam near Spring City, Tenn.by Wednesday or Thursday with even more rain forecast for the region.
