U.S. police release body-camera videos from Vegas shooting

After Stephen Paddock opened fire on concertgoers from his hotel room in Las Vegas in October, officers stealthily moved down the hallways with guns drawn, ordering hotel occupants to stay indoors.

Officers can be heard shouting to each other to say they have checked parts of the room.

As more police enter the room, they talk about the number of firearms, with one saying there are at least 10 high-powered weapons.

"Breach, breach, breach", a voice can be heard over the radio as officers took cover in a stairwell in the moments before entering Paddock's suite.

The videos show Paddock's arsenal of rifles scattered on the floor and on chairs in the room. He said it would be onerous and hard for the police department to handle the releases and described the footage as harmful to people who were injured in the massacre or lost loved ones. The bodycam footage did not include timestamps.

Footage made public Wednesday from two officers' body-worn cameras shows Stephen Paddock's body on his back, clad in dark trousers and a long-sleeve shirt with a glove on his left hand. "There's a shooter! He's shot and killed multiple people already", an officer shouts as he passes on the hunt for the man who killed 58 people from his high-rise hotel suite. "There's someone shooting inside the casino".

Police released hours of footage from two officers' body-worn cameras Wednesday in response to a lawsuit from The Associated Press and other news organizations.

The top spokesperson for the local sheriff's department, Carla Alston, said Wednesday that no one in the agency would comment about whether the first officer through the door followed proper procedure by not turning on his camera or whether he had been disciplined for violating policies. It's unclear why Hancock failed to do so.

Lombardo said the department would release more records in batches in coming weeks.

Police had appealed an earlier ruling that the material be released, following requests by media, including CNN.

A preliminary report on the mass shooting released by police in January revealed new evidence that Paddock planned the attack well in advance-including a stay at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino a month before the shooting.

Sheriff Joe Lombardo told the public on Tuesday that the department would release the video. "We believe the release of the graphic footage will further traumatize a wounded community and for that, we apologize", Lombardo said. He said, however, that none of it offered insight into the motive for the crime.

Police said Paddock, a 64-year-old former accountant and high-stakes video poker player, killed 58 people and injured nearly 500 when he opened fire on concert-goers through a hotel window.
