'Uphill Battle,' But Net Neutrality Defenders Say Victory in House Possible

Senator Richard Blumenthal speaks in favor of net neutrality on the Senate floor

The measure, which was backed by all 49 Democrats and Republican Sens. The symbolic move was led by the Democrats, with the support of three Republican Senators. If both the House and Senate vote to overturn the FCC decision, that will focus attention squarely on the White House-putting pressure on the president to reconsider and, if he does not, assuring that net neutrality will be an issue in the 2020 presidential election.

"Net neutrality is the lifeblood of the internet", Blumenthal said in speech on the Senate floor before the vote.

Senate Democrats, led by Ed Markey of MA, used the Congressional Review Act-an oversight tool that permits Congress to repeal rulings made by agencies such as the FCC-to force Wednesday's vote.

Even if the resolution fails, many states, including California and NY, are doing all they can to fight back against the FCC's decision with their own net neutrality proposals. "...[O] ur light-touch approach will deliver better, faster, and cheaper Internet access and more broadband competition to the American people-something that millions of consumers desperately want and something that should be a top priority", he said in a statement. As a result, their bottom line could be harmed if, say, a net neutrality repeal allowed Verizon or Comcast to throttle speeds on that rival content or charge a premium for higher speeds for people using those services.

There is not much hope that the resolution will pass the House of Representatives, as Republicans there outnumber Democrates considerably.

"You ignored the overwhelming public support - I mean, I've never seen such overwhelming public support - for net neutrality", Leahy said. However, Republicans have voted en masse to have these regulations repealed, alongside Trump's vociferous dismissal of the Obama-era development. John Kennedy (R-La.), and Sen.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer spoke after the vote to begin debate earlier Wednesday, arguing that "at stake is the future of the internet".

"Net neutrality is about keeping the internet accessible for small businesses, students, entrepreneurs, startups and Ohioans looking for jobs", Brown said. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., and Ed Markey, D-Mass. While the name for the principle isn't that old, the basic idea predates the internet and has its roots in the telephone and telegraph networks and even older services. It will then need the support of every Democrat and 22 Republicans.

Pai's net neutrality repeal is slated to take effect on June 11, unless Congress stops it.

Those fighting to restore net neutrality have called the FCC's decision to repeal the policy "disastrous" for its potential impact on the average consumer and middle-class family.

Yesterday (16 May) was another victory for those who wish to retain net neutrality and avoid a future where the internet is multi-tiered and stacked against those who can not afford the fastest connections.
