Apple announces watchOS 5, allowing you to compete with friends

Apple WWDC 2018

Gamification has always been central to the Apple Watch tracking experience. Apple's podcast app will sync with the smartwatch and all your devices.

Another new feature for watchOS 5 is the addition of Podcasts to the Apple Watch.

Watch faces are an area of intense interest for Apple Watch owners, because these faces are among the few ways people can personalize their watches. The new Shortcuts and Suggestions features are coming the the WatchOS Siri as well. And the Siri watch face will display notifications from third-party apps, not just the watch's built-in apps.

Apple's WWDC 2018 opening keynote has now drawn to a close and just as had been predicted, the company showed off a raft of new software updates, all of which will arrive later this year.

Apple's watchOS 5 now enables users to invite another Apple Watch wearer to compete in a seven-day Activity competition, earning points for closing Activity Rings, while receiving coaching notifications to help stay engaged and win the week.

A new Workout type for Yoga has been added, as well as Hiking with elevation tracking. Apple also introduced new summer band colors in Marine Green, Peach and Sky Blue.

Apple is set to release a new version of WatchOS with, unsurprisingly, new fitness features.

The new interface also has an option to keep track of your rolling mile pace and your steps per minute cadence, and give you a custom alert pulse on your wrist (using haptic touch) when you fall below or go above the pace you wanted.

But that's not all, because you'll be able to add student ID cards to your Apple Watch, and you'll be able to use it anywhere you can use your card.

The student ID feature is part of several other new features to be added in iOS 12 and WatchOS 5, Business Insider reported.

This feature allows Apple Watches running watchOS 5 to send short messages to each other. Apple is partnering with a handful of universities, including Duke, Johns Hopkins and Temple University, to roll out that integration this fall.

Furthermore, Apple also released a new watch face to celebrate LGBTQ Pride month, which users can now download from the Face Gallery in the Apple Watch app.
