Canadian F1 Grand Prix 2018 Qualifying: Saturday's Results, Times, Final Grid

Canadian Grand Prix - Strategy guide

Max Verstappen was third and the other Red Bull auto, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was fourth.

Despite failing to carry over his pace from practice into qualifying, Verstappen has high hopes Red Bull will be just as strong in race trim versus Ferrari and Mercedes.

"It was great to carry the momentum we've had this year into qualifying", said Vettel, who took pole position for the fourth time in seven races this season.

And then taking a sweet victory and winning the Canadian GP for the first time since Schumacher did so in 2004.

Hamilton's bid for a record-equalling seventh victory in Montreal was compromised from the start of the race with his engine suffering from cooling problems.

Lance Stroll of Montreal, the first Canadian to race in F1 since Jacques Villeneuve left in 2006, qualified 17th as his Williams team's struggles continued. "Also myself didn't get the rhythm yet so missing a little bit of the laps but overall we tried to go through the programme as good as we could".

Vettel ended Q1 on top ahead of the Finn with Hamilton third, but it was tense for McLaren as twice former champion Fernando Alonso squeezed into Q2 at the end in 14th place ahead of team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne.

"Today we're not the favourites", Vettel said. Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull have dominated the field this season. "I quickly saw that it was going to be hard to take pole position but you always do your best and try to get the best out of the auto".

We'll give you a few pointers shortly in what to look out for in today's race but it could once more be an interesting one for strategy, with how long each driver can make the hypersoft and ultrasoft tyres last a critical aspect.

Kimi Raikkonen had been third after the first runs in Q3, but ran wide onto the grass exiting Turn 2 on his second set of hypersofts and was forced to abort the lap.

Vettel sees another chance to honour the memory of Gilles Villeneuve, who died in a crash at the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix, with a Ferrari win.

"It didn't really develop, it didn't get much quicker and it was just a hard session", he signed. On a track like this when you have to attack kerbs so much it's important you feel at home and have confidence to play around and I think then you can extract a bit more from the vehicle. We're trying to compensate for that.
