Docho Eshete and about 80 members of his congregation had gathered at the southern end of Lake Abaya on Sunday morning, close to a national park where enormous crocodiles have been seen covering the shore.

While hardly an everyday occurrence, crocodile attacks are a known risk in Ethiopia - as in any region where they thrive.

His body was later recovered from the water with bite marks on his back, legs and hands, according to local reports.

A Protestant pastor was fatally attacked by a crocodile as he baptized followers at a lake in Ethiopia.

While Dr Eshete was performing baptisms, a crocodile came out and killed him.

Members of the congregation, as well as fishermen on the lake, attempted to rescue the clergyman - an nearly impossible task. "All of a sudden, a crocodile jumped out of the lake and grabbed the pastor", a local resident told the BBC.

The Lonely Planet guide, warns visitors to Lake Abaya that the area has a "large population of crocodiles, which are said to be aggressive towards people and animals".

They only succeeded by throwing their nets into the water to stop the croc carrying it away. Nile crocodiles can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh more than 2,200 pounds.

Experts believe they carry out more than 300 attacks on humans in Africa every year.
