Instagram unveils new video service app

Facebook's Instagram service is loosening its restraints on video in an attempt to lure younger viewers away from YouTube when they're looking for something to watch on their smartphones.

Mr Systrom also announced a new feature enabling some users to share long-form videos up to one-hour long. Eventually, all users will be able to upload videos of any length, Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom said on Wednesday.

Instagram, now almost 8 years old, is moving further from its roots as a photo-sharing service as it dives headlong into longer-form video.

No plans are now in the works to produce original Instagram content for IGTV.

Through a blog post announcing the new service, Instagram pointed out that this is indeed longer vertical video.

Instagram also shares how businesses, creators, and more can "leverage" the new platform, reiterating its massive user base.

The launch of IGTV not only paves the way for longer content, but it could also allow Instagram and its content partners make more money through advertising.

More importantly, 72 per cent of USA kids ranging from 13 to 17 years old use Instagram, second to YouTube at 85 per cent, according to the Pew Research Center.

In fact, Systrom kicked off the IGTV press event by talking about teens' changing video consumption habits, noting that they're watching less TV than ever.

Systrom said IGTV is built to be used on a smartphone, and boosts the time for videos from the previous limit of one minute.

Since then it has become a strong enginer of growth for Facebook in terms of users and ad revenues.

Watching IGTV videos is a bit like watching an Instagram live video now in that all videos are vertical and you can leave comments while you watch.
