Kim Kardashian set to meet newly released Alice Marie Johnson

Trump Commutes Sentence of Drug Offender Championed by Kardashian

The pardon comes after reality TV star Kim Kardashian West visited the White House to speak directly to Trump about Johnson's case last week, after contacting his daughter Ivanka to help set up the meeting.

Johnson learned Wednesday that her life sentence plus 25 years for her role in a cocaine distribution ring, a nonviolent drug offense, was being commuted by Trump through a phone call from Kim Kardashian West.

She said she would be an active force in the Trump administration's efforts at prison reform, led by son-in-law and White House adviser Jared Kushner. The statement noted Johnson was known as a mentor to other inmates, and cited recommendations for clemency from prison officials.

Johnson again thanked Kardashian West and Trump Thursday morning on ABC's Good Morning America.

The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star took up Alice's cause a year ago (17), after reading about her life sentence for a non-violent, first-time drug offence, and recruited top lawyer Shawn Holley to lead the effort to free her from the Aliceville Correctional Institution in Alabama. Johnson explained her crimes came as a result of being unemployed, and she would go on to relay messages and provide a line of communication for a cocaine trafficking operation.

"I believe because I'm recognized now and my case is magnified through media, it has caught the attention of others", Johnson said.

A commuted sentence replaces the original court ordered sentence but does not change the conviction.

Johnson reunited with her family on Wednesday, and it was the most joyous scene ever! News, "She really wants to make a difference in people's lives and left Washington feeling very inspired".

Another attorney, Brittany K. Barnett, said earlier that Johnson feels overwhelmed with emotion and like she's been "resurrected from the dead". Case files are not public, so it's unclear why Obama found her petition undeserving.

"Because you now have a president who effectively thinks he can do things by pardons", he explained.

Taking to Twitter, she told her 60.1million followers: 'The phone call I just had with Alice will forever be one of my best memories. He pardoned the late heavyweight boxer Jack Johnson, controversial former Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Lewis "Scooter" Libby, a former top aide to then-Vice President Dick Cheney.
