Meghan Makes Buckingham Palace Balcony Debut with Queen Elizabeth

Kate Middleton

A 22-year-old Sikh soldier created history today by becoming the first to wear a turban instead of a bearskin hat during an annual parade that marks the birthday of Britain's longest-reigning monarch Queen Elizabeth II.

Joining the Queen to watch the event were other senior Royals, including Prince Charles and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Philip, the Queen's husband, did not attend, having retired from public life previous year.

The youngsters always have a front-row view of the aircraft display, while Meghan Markle and Prince Harry were positioned at the back.

Their public appearance together followed media speculation in recent weeks that they had been on honeymoon, although Kensington Palace, Harry´s office, has not provided details of any trip.

Everyone from the Royal Family was standing up on the balcony as the Trooping the Colour event took place.

The boisterous birthday parade has been the official commemoration of a British sovereign's birthday since 1748.

Markle previously raised a select few eyebrows with her choice of wedding dress, which also let a bit of shoulder peek through.

The princess, who was standing on a bench in the Buckingham Palace's balcony, alongside brother Prince George and cousin Savannah Phillips, was initially seen having a gala time at the show. Overseen by their mother Kate Middleton, the two did their best royal official duties. Despite speculation, new baby Prince Louis did not make an appearance on the balcony. While Harry smiled and waved, she looked a bit overwhelmed as she surveyed the huge crowds lining the route. Meghan and Harry have stated their desire to jump right in and get to work in their new roles.

In Australia, Meghan and Harry will visit Sydney for the 2018 Invictus Games, the Paralympic-style sporting event Harry founded for service men and women.
