Mexico coach angry after team suffers 24 fouls vs South Korea

Mexico have taken a huge step towards the last-16 stage of the 2018 World Cup courtesy of a 2-1 win over South Korea in Rostov.

With a 2-0 lead in the second half, El Tri faithful took to chanting "Profe Osorio" in support of the team's Colombian coach Juan Carlos Osorio, who before the tournament had been heavily criticized by pundits and a football-loving public for his tactics and management of the national team. Defender Edson Alvarez replaced Hugo Ayala at the back.

Mexico, who have six points from two games and are on the brink of a last-16 place, began their campaign with a stunning 1-0 win over Germany but Osorio said it was important for his side not to get carried away by the euphoria.

El Tri's form, confidence and collective spirit in Russian Federation surprised everyone in its World Cup opener, and Juan Carlos Osorio's team won't pass up the chance to announce itself as Group F's team to beat when it faces South Korea. Javier Hernandez had their first half-chance of the match, but the striker's header was always moving wide of the post. It almost paid off after Hirving Lozano out-sprinted his marker, but his final delivery was blocked away.

Expectedly, Tottenham star Son Heung-min was their most unsafe outlet and threatened the Mexico goal a couple of times in the opening exchanges.

Mexico, shock winners over Germany in their opening game, went ahead in the 26th minute when Vela sent goalkeeper Cho Hyun-woo the wrong way from the spot after Andres Guardado's cross hit the outstretched arm of Jang Hyun-soo at close range.

Ochoa then did well to keep out an attempt from Son late in the first period, before Lozano fired over the crossbar down the other end as Vela's spot kick separated the two teams at the interval. South Korea lost its opening match. And all of them should be afraid of Mexico.

Shin Tae-yong's team did have one back in stoppage time when Son curled a sensational effort into the top corner, but Mexico held on in the final moments to pick up a huge win.
