Porsche Taycan is the name for the production Mission E

German automaker Porsche has revealed in a recent announcement that the production version of its first all-electric vehicle will be called the "Taycan.' Thus far, the automaker has been calling its first all-electric vehicle as 'Mission E", ever since the official unveiling of the concept in 2015. Porsche has also confirmed a sub-3.5 sec 0-100kph and a sub-12 sec 0-200kph acceleration time for the Taycan, but exact data has not been disclosed as yet. "Our new electric sports auto is strong and dependable; it's a vehicle that can consistently cover long distances and that epitomises freedom", explains Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. The company says the vehicle can hit 60 mph in "well under" 3.5 seconds and 124 mph miles per in less than 12 seconds. Porsche has said that when the Taycan goes on sale, it'll recharge from empty to 80 percent in 20 minutes, which the company has already called "Turbo Charging". Up until now, the Model S has been without any direct competition since its debut in 2012, although that is changing. The production model will get the new Porsche Taycan name and be unveiled fully in early 2019, with customers taking delivery later that year.

Overall, the name fits in Porsche naming nomenclator. Over $580 million will be allocated to the production of the Taycan and other vehicles based on it, including a crossover previously known as Mission E Cross Turismo. The four-door, four-seat Taycan's floor-mounted batteries point to an extremely low centre of gravity and handling to match more focused performance machines. Range will reportedly be over 500km under the NEDC testing scheme, although we're holding our breath to hear how that range looks under WLTP.

Porsche plans to invest more than 6 billion euros ($7 billion) in electric vehicle technology by 2022, doubling the investment that the company had originally planned. Of that, €500 million of that will go to Taycan variants, with €1 billion toward electrification and hybrid versions of the existing range.
