Uruguay rolls Russian Federation to top Group A

Uruguay's Luis Suarez and Uruguay's Martin Caceres arrive to Uruguay's official training on the eve of the group A match between Russia and Uruguay at the 2018 soccer World Cup at the Samara Arena in Samara Russia Sunday

The national football team of Uruguay held a training session on late Sunday afternoon at the Samara Arena ahead of their closing group stage match of the 2018 FIFA World Cup against hosts Russian Federation in the city of Samara on June 25.

Uruguay's lead came in the 10th minute when Luis Suarez, showing great presence of mind, drilled a free-kick low and hard through a breach in the wall, after Edinson Cavani had dragged his marker Segey Iganashevich wide with his intelligent movement.

But perhaps the biggest plus was the late goal from Cavani, who had been frustrated during the group stage.

There was a party atmosphere around the scorching Samara Arena before kick-off, with fans having travelled from all over the country keen to share in the good feeling surrounding their national team.

Uruguay - Muslera 6, Coates 6, Godin 7, Caceres 6, Torreira 8, Nandez 6, Vecino 7, Bentancur 7, Laxalt 7, Suarez 7, Cavani 7. "When they feel comfortable or at home, they score goals".

Seasoned campaigners Uruguay appear to be warming up as the tournament goes on and they still have not a conceded a goal - a first for them after three matches at the World Cup.

Uruguay, who kept their sixth straight clean sheet, will face the runners-up from Group B, which will be decided when Spain, Portugal and Iran battle it out for two last-16 spots later on Monday.

The host team achieved its minimum objective and already qualified from Group A along with their opponent.

For Uruguay's demanding coach Oscar Tabarez, whose side had not hit top gear in their previous two matches, it was a case of job done - even if there was certainly no cause for celebration. "We are preparing for this game exactly the same way", he said at the press conference. "I like how my team played after we lost one player".

Russian Federation left back Yuri Zhirkov was taken out of the match against Egypt because of an ankle injury but was available as a substitute on Monday.

VOLGOGRAD, Russia - The oldest person to play in a World Cup match gave up a pair of goals, allowing Saudi Arabia to beat Egypt in a match between two teams that had already been eliminated. Ranked No. 14, La Celeste defeated Egypt 1-0 in its tournament opener and then had the same result against Saudi Arabia on Wednesday. The team did not say when he might return.
