Actor Ving Rhames held at gunpoint in his own home

Ving Rhames racial profiling

Mission: Impossible - Fallout star Ving Rhames revealed he had a startling encounter with police earlier this year that left him at gunpoint in his own home. This happened this year", said the "Mission: "Impossible" actor.

"I open the door, there's a red dot pointed at my face from a nine millimeter", Rhames said. He said once he opened the door, a police officer told him to put his hands up while pointing his pistol at the actor. The police claimed Rhames' neighbor called and said a "large Black man" was breaking into a home.

"I had a situation, I live in Brentwood, and I have another house in Santa Monica, California", Rhames recalled. They provided him with the address of the neighbor, and Rhames went over to the house with an officer, but he said that when he confronted the neighbor, they denied it. By sheer coincidence, one officer (who Rhames remembers being a captain with the Santa Monica Police) recognized him.

Rhames said multiple officers, including a captain of the police unit with a K9 unit, were present.

"They say do it with one hand so then I have to do it with one hand".

"He said to me, 'A woman called 911 [and] said a large black man was breaking into the house".

"This is the God's honest truth". So, as a matter of fact, I was watching ESPN, so I get up, and I'm just in my basketball shorts, literally.

Rhames was answering a question about his experiences of racism.

Rhames said the officer pointing the gun at him was joined by two other officers as well as a police dog and the chief of police, who recognized the Golden Globe victor and instructed the officers stand down. "Just like ... Trayvon had a bag of Skittles", says Rhames, referring to Trayvon Martin, the teenager gunned down in Florida by a neighborhood patrol watchman in 2012.

"We got a call from several neighbors indicating that they thought what they were looking at was a burglary in the home and we responded within minutes", said Lieutenant Saul Rodriguez.

Rhames also thought back to the 2006 case of Sean Bell, a New York City man just like himself, who was shot fifty times by the NYPD on the night of his bachelor party, just a day before his wedding.
