During that shooting, the suspect crashed into a pole near the Trader Joe's in the 2700 block of Hyperion Avenue.

Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated police and firefighters for their work and mourned the loss of life at the Trader Joe's where he and his wife regularly shopped when they lived in the neighbourhood. He was terrorized as he lay on the floor and others around him sobbed.

He was booked Sunday on suspicion of murder. The woman killed in the Trader Joe's was identified as Melyda Corado, a family member told ABC News. An autopsy is still pending. "I miss my sister", Albert Corado wrote on Twitter.

The situation began around 3:30 pm local time, after a suspect allegedly shot his girlfriend and grandmother and drove his grandmother's auto into a pole outside a Trader Joe's in the Silver Lake neighborhood.

"That suspect fled the location in his grandmother's vehicle, taking that female victim with him".

Police officers and members of the Los Angeles Fire Department escort a woman on a stretcher after a suspect barricaded inside a Trader Joe's supermarket in Silverlake, Los Angeles, on July 21, 2018.

It was unclear if she was struck by gunfire that originated from the suspect, identified as 28-year-old Gene Atkins, or police.

Heavily armed officers in riot gear stood along the side of the store and used mirrors to look inside as hostage negotiators tried to coax the man into freeing his 40 to 50 hostages and surrendering.

About three hours after the ordeal began, negotiations led to the man "handcuffing himself and coming outside and surrendering to SWAT officers", the police chief said.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the incident began as a auto chase pursuit from Hollywood that ended with the man's vehicle crashing next to the Trader Joe's store.

Outside the store, the man exchanged gunfire with police again and a woman was shot and killed.

Six people ranging in age from 12 to 81 were taken to the hospital, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

Atkins' grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Madison, was listed in stable condition on Sunday.

The suspect's vehicle crashed next to the store and he opened fire on the officers chasing him, before entering the premises as shoppers ran for cover, the Los Angeles Times said.

The grandmother was shot a number of times, and was in a critical condition, police said.

Police believe a man involved in a standoff with officers at a Los Angeles supermarket shot his grandmother and girlfriend before firing at officers during a pursuit, then crashing outside the supermarket and.

People frantically tried to flee from the store and some were seen climbing through windows while others darted through the back door. Other views from TV helicopters showed people leaving through the front door with their hands up.
