Heat Wave: Excessive heat warning in effect Sunday as unsafe conditions persist

NAM model predicts a heat index of 100 Sunday at 2 p.m

The National Weather Service issued the advisory, which starts at 11 a.m Saturday and runs until 9 p.m. Saturday night, includes Wake, Durham, Nash, Johnson, Edgecombe, Franklin, Lee and Moore counties.

In some areas it could feel as hot as 95-100 degrees Monday and Tuesday, prompting a hazardous weather outlook in Maine's interior, according to the weather service.

On Thursday, the extreme heat can be found over the Rockies and Central Plains, with Denver expecting a record high of 103 degrees, the city's hottest day since it tied the all-time Denver maximum of 105 in late June 2012. Highs will rise back into the lower 90s during the afternoon hours and the humid conditions will create heat indices near 100°.

The nearest cooling center may be found by calling 311, or visiting the city's "Beat the Heat" website.

Keep pets cool outside: Provide water and shade. Some residents are urged to limit their time outdoors including young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems.

It will be another day of warm temperatures across much of the West. Temperatures will be almost 100 degrees in parts of interior California on Saturday. With winds that won't be that strong, it may cool down a bit near Lake Michigan as the day progresses.

Sunday will be in the mid 90s with a heat index around 100. Heat will begin to drop off after that, but the moisture will increase, keeping the heat index high through the week, and making things feel much warmer as well as very uncomfortable.

Muscle cramping is usually the first sign of heat-related illnesses (heat exhaustion or heat stroke).

Anyone who'll be working or otherwise spending time outside between now and Monday should take extra precautions. When possible.reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Dress for summer. Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing to reflect heat and sunlight. To reduce risk during outdoor work.the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments.
