Horner slams Renault's below par product

Ricciardo and Bottas clash after Aussie’s overtaking masterclass

"I'm not going to get drawn into saying too much".

Daniel Ricciardo set the pace in first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix on Friday, living up to expectations that Red Bull would be among the favourites at a track that suits their auto.

Verstappen had been livid on team radio when the failure occurred, first suggesting that he runs the vehicle until the engine "blows up", before screaming: "F**k!"

But when he was told to pull over at the side of the track, he vented his frustration. All the f****** time.

Max Verstappen made no attempt to hide his disdain for Renault's dismal reliability record after suffering an early retirement from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Speaking to Sky Sports during the race, Horner described the engine as "below par". The Dutchman, who complained earlier this weekend the engine is costing the team over half a second on the straights alone, was running fifth when the issue occurred.

He told the team: "Can I not just go ahead and **** it".

Horner added: "We pay multi-millions of pounds for these engines and for first class, or state-of-the-art product, and you can see it's quite clearly some way below that".

'It's frustrating, that's what it is. Honestly." In more sober mood post-race, he reflected: "We're throwing valuable points away.

Horner said he would let Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul "come up with the excuses afterwards".

Renault powered the former champions to drivers' and constructor's titles for four years in a row between 2010 and 2013 but the relationship frayed in the current V6 turbo hybrid era.

Daniel Ricciardo of Australia and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing on track during practice for the Formula One Formula One Grand Prix of Hungary.

Red Bull had fancied their chances in Hungary before the weekend but rain in qualifying dented their hopes, with 20-year-old Verstappen starting seventh and Australian Daniel Ricciardo back in 12th.

The issue compounded Red Bull's misery on what had been a hard race weekend at one of its more favourable tracks - and Verstappen said after the race that both he and teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who finished fourth, deserved better. "The normal strategy is to change everything you can".
