No curse unleashed as Egyptian archaeologists open mystery sarcophagus

The tomb dating back to the Ptolemaic period found in the Sidi Gaber district of Alexandria

On July 1, Egypt unearthed a 2,000-year-old sarcophagus in Alexandria, revealing that it is made of black granite of about 265 meters in length and 185 cm in height.

After opening the 30-ton (27,000 kg) coffin, the experts have found three decomposed bodies that were lying in a pool of sewage water inside the stone coffin.

On Wednesday, archaeologists pried open the ancient coffin and discovered a gruesome scene inside: three skeletons submerged in red sewage water.

He said: "We found the bones of three people, in what looks like a family burial".

At nearly 6.5 feet high and 10 feet long, the structure is the largest of its kind ever found intact, the BBC reports.

The tomb was found to contain three skeletons believed to be those of soldiers as one of the skulls has marks indicating an arrow wound

Mr Waziri said it was unlikely the remains found this week belonged to any notable members of the Ptolemaic dynasty (332 BC-30 BC) associated with Alexander the Great, or the subsequent Roman era.

Despite that, the site has now been cleared of people amid fears the sarcophagus could release lethal toxic fumes, Egypt's state-owned newspaper Al-Ahram says.

The skeletons are believed to be three warriors, as one of the skulls bears a wound resulted from the hit of an arrow, according to the Ministry of Antiquity. But more answers can be expected after forensic examinations, which will take place at the Alexandria National Museum, according to Egyptian state media reports.

When a black granite sarcophagus was found at the bottom of a pit in Alexandria, Egypt, this past week, the discovery immediately prompted questions and theories ranging from the sensible to the supernatural.

An alabaster bust, its features weathered beyond recognition, was also found with the sarcophagus.

"The sarcophagus has been opened, but we have not been hit by a curse", said Waziri, dismissing claims made by some United Kingdom media outlets about "possible curse" could be cast on the world in case the tomb was opened. "That is why I called the Ministry of Antiquties to hurry up and open the sarcophagus as soon as possible, to put an end to such a dream and suggestions", Hawass told Ahram Online.
