Novichok poisoning: Charlie Rowley's brother 'very surprised' by his quick recovery

Charlie Rowley, one of two Britons poisoned with the nerve agent Novichok last month, was released from hospital on Friday.

The couple collapsed a few hours apart on June 30 at Mr Rowley's flat, in Amesbury, Wiltshire.

Sturgess and her partner Charlie Rowley, 45, both residents of Amesbury, a town eight miles north of Salisbury, were hospitalized on June 30.

Rowley's brother Matthew told The Sunday Telegraph his brother's memory about the incident is "vague", but the 45-year-old remembers handling a container that appeared to be a perfume bottle. Sturgess, 44, died in the hospital on July 8.

"Charlie has been through an appalling experience most of us could never imagine", said Lorna Wilkinson, head of nursing at Salisbury District Hospital.

Sturgess's family paid tribute to the mother of three, calling her "a gentle soul who was generous to a fault".

PHE medical director Paul Cosford reiterated its previous advice: "Do not pick up any items such as syringes, needles, cosmetics or similar objects made of materials such as metal, plastic or glass".

More than 100 police officers had been searching for the source of Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess' exposure in Amesbury, where they lived, and Salisbury, where the Skripals were poisoned in March.

The Times understands that links to the GRU are being examined as part of the investigation into the botched attempt to kill Sergei Skripal, the former Russian double agent, and his daughter.

The police said that there was no hint that Rowley and Sturgess were targeted in a deliberate matter.

Britain has blamed Russian Federation for the novichok poisonings of the Skripals and the accidental poisoning of Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess - with Russian Federation denying the charges.

The Metropolitan Police, who are leading the investigation, declined to comment.

On July 19, British media reported that investigators believe they have identified the suspects responsible for the Skripal attack using security-camera footage and records of people entering the country.

Rowley, however, will remain under police protection as detectives continue their investigation into how the couple came into contact with the nerve agent. Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement and accused the British intelligence agencies of staging the attack to stoke anti-Russian hysteria.
